St Stephen's University’s Foundation Year Program is a No-Gap Gap Year Program. Upon successful completion of this one-year diploma program, you can go immediately into the second year of either SSU’s Bachelor of International Studies (BIS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) programs OR you may choose to transfer your credits to another institution.

Join us in our Foundation Year program and you will:

  • discover your interests and passions
  • experience Christian spiritual formation that is influenced by a variety of faith streams
  • develop strong reading, writing, and research skills
  • continue directly into a full SSU BA or BIS degree program
  • learn together in a community of friends
  • participate in an optional two-week travel study component

We believe there is a direct connection between success in academic studies and one’s spiritual and emotional well-being. So our student body is small (under 150 students) intentionally. Our small size means that close relationships develop between students, faculty and staff, as each of us becomes who we are meant to be in life with Jesus.

The first year of university life presents a number of challenges for students.  The classes and expectations of teachers are different than high school, and for most students, this is the first time to live away from home.  Our aim is to provide a supportive environment in which students can exercise their independence as they deal with the pressures of studies, while living responsibly.  The goal of such studies is to develop a more mature, coherent, and compassionate view of the world with “a feeling mind and a thinking heart.”

You will soon find that SSU is your home away from home.

This program is for you if you are:

  • seeking solid direction regarding future study, employment or ministry
  • considering a Jesus-centered year of study prior to enrollment in a public college, trade school or university
  • looking for a year of refreshing and reflection in an intentional Christian community
  • seeking preparation for a change in career, an entrepreneurial endeavour, or service within a local church
  • retired and ready to invest your valuable time and experience in new adventures
